The couple Hannele and Eivind Tonna has for years been among the best ski orienteers in the world, but now they are ready to finish their careers. “I have been talking about quitting sometimes, haven’t quit, but now the time has come to do it”, Eivind says.
Eivind is looking forward to the relay and his last World Championships race. “For more than ten years I have been among the ten best in the world. Now I am looking forward to concentrating on other parts of life”, he says. “It has been nice to focus totally on sport and work to perform better. You’re lucky when you can do that”, he adds. The most memorable moment for Eivind is the European Championships relay victory in Italy in 2003.
Hannele has taken several medals both in relay and individual races during the years and managed to grab an individual gold at the World Ski Orienteering Championships Sprint in Japan two years ago. Since then she has been working full time, but still decided to take part in these Championships.
Hannele ended up 11th on the Sprint on Tuesday, but she will still be seen in the Finnish relay team on Sunday. “I had a free spot on the Sprint which also motivated me to compete in the relay”, she says. This time Hannele is certain that the last chance for her to take another world championships medal is at the end of this week.
