The International Orienteering Federation is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and aims to collect at least 500 compasses this summer to be sent to developing orienteering nations around the world. Compasses will be collected at the World Orienteering Championships in Savoie, France, and at the World MTB Orienteering Championships in Veneto, Italy.
In order to make this happen, we need your help: If you are attending either as competitor or spectator, please remember to take your old compasses with you. You can write a greeting note – or at least the name of your home country – on a piece of paper to go with the compass. Pin punches and control flags are also very much needed in the new orienteering countries.
If you want to help, but are not going to one of these events yourself, you can ask someone else to take your compasses with them, or alternatively send your contribution directly to the IOF Secretariat: IOF, Radiokatu 20, 00093 SLU, Finland.
The result of the compass campaign, as well as follow-up stories on where the compasses ended up, will be published on the IOF website.
