North American Orienteering Championships 2016

When the competitors run the North American Orienteering Championships (NAOC), they fight for the title as regional champion. In addition to that, they fight for points in the overall competition between the USA and Canada.

Every other year, NAOC takes place in either Canada or the USA. This year, the runners from the USA are on home court in the battle of North America. The event consists of three individual WRE events and finishes with a Sprint Relay.
The championships take place around the city of Hanover, New Hampshire, in the Northeastern American corner close to the Canadian border. The Middle distance will take place on Friday September 23. followed by the Long distance Saturday. On Sunday morning, the Sprint will be decided and after lunch, the national teams run a Sprint Relay.

Besides competing for personal honor, the elite runners also run for important points in a national battle between Canada and the USA. A scoring system agreed upon between both federations will decide which country will raise the so-called Björn Kjellström Trophy. Since the 80s, Canada dominated the battle for many years, but at the three most recent championships, Team USA has been victorious. A similar competition is held in the junior classes.
More than 500 participants have entered NAOC, among them the Canadian runner Emily Kemp, who showed good shape at WOC in Sweden, with a fourth position at the Middle distance. Follow Emily Kemp and all the other runners on the NAOC webpage.
