Nordic Tour: second win for Simone

Several less well-known names figured on the podium in today’s middle distance race, but Simone Niggli was again in a class of her own, winning the women’s race in wet conditions in Oslo today by more than 1½ minutes. The men’s race was won by home runner Carl Godager Kaas.
Numbers one and two in the women’s race were the same as in yesterday’s sprint, Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) finishing 1.31 slower than Simone Niggli. Norway’s Mari Fasting took third place just 2 seconds behind Tove Alexandersson. Switzerland had three runners in the top six, Sarina Jenzer and Sara Lüscher taking fourth and fifth places respectively.
In the men’s race Carl Godager Kaas was three seconds quicker on the course than second-placed Gustav Bergman, Sweden. Bjørn Ekeberg made it a good day for the home team by taking third place, 21 seconds down on the winner. For Switzerland, Andreas Kyburz upstaged his more well-known brother Matthias, yesterday’s winner, with a commendable fourth place whilst Daniel Hubmann continued his rehabilitation with sixth position today.
The next race in this second round of the 2013 World Cup is a knock-out sprint on Tuesday in and around the small town of Sigtuna, NW of Stockholm. There will be a qualification race in the morning, followed in the afternoon by semi-finals for the top 24 athletes from the qualification race and a final for the top 8 from the semi-finals.
