Nordic Tour in Oslo: Gueorgiou back at his best

In the shortened Middle Distance race at Holmenkollen today, Thierry Gueorgiou, France, showed that he is back on his best form after injury in the middle of the season, winning the 4.9 km course (with 290 m climb) by 42 seconds, in a time of exactly 29 minutes. Simone Niggli, Switzerland added another impressive victory to her long list of World Cup successes this season; her win today was by 1.19.
Peter Öberg, Sweden was the closest to Thierry Gueorgiou today. Gueorgiou was 2 seconds quicker than Öberg at the first TV control, and still only 3 seconds quicker at the second TV point, but the last section of the course proved decisive. Denmark’s Tue Lassen was third fastest for a large part of the race but ended fourth behind Matthias Kyburz, Switzerland who was very fast on the last section.
Judith Wyder, Switzerland and Minna Kauppi, Finland did their best to challenge Simone Niggli, but she proved far the stronger overall on the 4.2 km/190 m climb course. Kauppi made a late mistake and finished fifth, allowing Tatyana Ryabkina, Russia and Lina Strand, Sweden to get ahead of her into third and fourth spots. Ida Bobach, Denmark did well after an early error to get up to the final podium place.
The next race of the Nordic Tour is on Tuesday, when the Gothenburg northern waterfront will be the venue for an urban Sprint, knock-out style. The finals for the best eight runners start at 17.55 (women) and 18.10 (men), Swedish time.
