Nordic Tour: Finland Sprint wins for Niggli and Leandersson
Posted on | September 7, 2012 | Category: News
Simone Niggli was back on the winning path today, after her lapse in the knock-out Sprint in Gothenburg, with victory in the Sprint final in Kajaani by 11 seconds over her long-time rival Helena Jansson. The men’s race was won by the young Swede Jonas Leandersson, who is current European Champion in Sprint with victory in Sweden in May.
Simone Niggli was fastest almost throughout the race, held on a rainy afternoon in parkland and built-up areas with the finish in one of the town squares. Third place was shared by Annika Billstam, Sweden and Emma Klingenberg, Denmark, winner in Gothenburg three days ago.
22-year-old Jonas Leandersson was the only runner to get ahead of Sprint specialist Matthias Kyburz, Switzerland who had won the qualification race earlier in the day and all stages of the Sprint in Gothenburg. Kyburz spoke after the race of making an error early on the course, but a very fast finish brought him in 1 second quicker than Fabian Hertner, Switzerland and Jerker Lysell, Sweden. One of the contenders for the Nordic Tour and overall World Cup titles, Olav Lundanes (Norway), was disqualified.
Somone Niggli and Matthias Kyburz lead the Nordic Tour standings by 3.13 and 3.22 respectively ahead of the final race tomorrow. Leading standings are listed at the foot of this report.
The races this afternoon were transmitted live both on TV and the internet by the Finnish TV company YLE, which will also be covering tomorrow’s World Cup Final. The chasing-start Middle Distance races start at 13.40 (men) and 14.50 (women), Finnish time. Got to www.nordicorienteeringtour.com.
