Nordic Tour: Emma Klingenberg stars in knock-out Sprint

20-year-old Danish athlete Emma Klingenberg was first to the finish in today’s knock-out Sprint final, 5 seconds in front of the experienced Russian Tatiana Ryabkina at the line. Favourite for the men’s race Matthias Kyburz, Switzerland triumphed by 4 seconds at the end of an intense and very close-fought battle.
Klingenberg has developed into a Sprint specialist and went one better today than her placing in the first Sprint in this World Cup round in Oslo. Helena Jansson was for much of the race her closest challenger, leading at both the first and third intermediate points whilst Klingenberg led at the first and fourth. Klingenberg was in fifth place at the third timed control, 7 seconds down on Jansson, who then fell back as the race progressed and finished fourth, 2 seconds behind Switzerland’s Judith Wyder. The winner clearly likes Gothenburg: she won the Junior World Championships Sprint title there in 2008.
Earlier in the day, the fastest three at the qualification stage were Helena Jansson, Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg and Simone Niggli. Niggli made a costly mistake in her semi-final, and Hausken Nordberg was unlucky to miss out on a place in the final, running in a semi-final where five runners finished within 3 seconds.
The men’s final was very close for two-thirds of the race with Olav Lundanes and Frédéric Tranchard setting the pace. In the end, the superior speed and skill of Matthias Kyburz saw him home 4 seconds ahead of Tranchard, with Swede Peter Öberg third, 13 seconds down on the winner. Kyburz had also won the qualification race and had the fastest time in the semi-finals, so it was a highly successful day for him.
The courses used a mix of urban and complex forest/semi-open terrain around the Gothenburg northern waterfront, with a double loop incorporating a forked section in the forest in the finals.
The Nordic Orienteering Tour continues on Friday with a Sprint qualification and final with 1-minute interval start at Vuokatti, Finland, the venue for next year’s World Championships.
