The winner of the women’s race, Simone Niggli, felt she had a lot of pressure on her shoulders before the race. “Now there isn’t so much pressure any more, but I like it if I feel nervous. That’s necessary to do your best”, she says.
The exceptional Swiss star had prepared for the races today by viewing the terrain on the internet from different angles. “I wanted to be well prepared, and I have used several hours looking at the terrain”, she says.
But Simone had done no more than that. Before today’s race she had never been in the centre of Lausanne except for driving along the main street.
“How the race went? Almost perfect”, she says. She lost just five seconds on one control.
Maja Alm got the silver medal and last year’s world champion Annika Billstam was very happy with getting the bronze. “It shows that a 36-year-old lady can still do well, and I almost as happy for this medal as I was for the gold last year”, the Swede says.
