New World Ranking: gender equity, world wide awareness, high level events

Posted on | January 14, 2014 | Category: News

The World Ranking scheme for foot orienteering has been changed for 2014. The basis for the changes was to recognise the importance of the most prestigious IOF events as major contributors to the World Ranking Scheme; to ensure that all nations who conduct a World Ranking Event have participants contributing to the World Ranking Scheme (in BRA, CAN, HKG and SLO the women’s class participants did not score any points); and to improve the value of the Regional Championships as contributors to the World Ranking Scheme.

IOF Vice President responsible for the World Ranking review, Mike Dowling, comments: “The analysis of data shows the Council decision achieves the remit aims. We now have our major events, WOC and World Cup, making more of a contribution to an orienteer’s World Ranking score. We provide a means by which our Regional Championships make more of a contribution to an orienteer’s World Ranking score. We have a wonderful promotional opportunity with the possibility of our athletes achieving the perfect ranking score. We ensure gender equity by having all World Ranking Events regardless of where they are held in our family now contributing to the World Ranking Scheme”.

Gender equity, no more zero-points events worldwide, and promotion for the best events and best athletes – these are the key for the foot orienteering world rankings!

The IOF now provides background information and calculations, earlier published in news articles, on a specific World Ranking 2014 page. Please view the page here: World Ranking (foot orienteering) 2014
