112 athletes representing 19 nations are gathered in Zwettl, Austria for three races this weekend that make up the first round of the 2017 MTBO World Cup.
Hilly terrain is promised for all three races – Middle Distance on Saturday, Sprint on Sunday and Long Distance on Monday. The Middle is in mainly forest terrain at Dietmanns, the Sprint in a mix of forest and urban in Zwettl, and the Long in a mix of forest and open areas with a dense path and track network, described as “very hilly”, at Grafenschlag. In all these areas, riding off-track is forbidden but there will be some marked routes in the terrain, linking paths together.
A full preview of this year’s international MTBO programme was included in the most recent IOF Newsletter. It will be fascinating to see if the ‘old order’ will prevail, or new names come to the fore, in this curtain-raiser for the new season.
The Middle Distance race tomorrow starts at 10.00 local time, with 14.5 km distance / 360 m climb in the women’s race and 20.4 km / 530 m in the men’s. Full details of this round can be found at www.wmtboc2018.at/mtbowc2017.
