MTBO World Cup: Strong start for Knudsen

Erik Skovgaard Knudsen, World Cup series winner in 2010, started his 2011 campaign in the best possible way with a victory in the first race this year, a sprint in the town of Tapolca in Hungary. Marika Hara, Finland, third in the World Cup last year, won the women’s race.
Knudsen won by 7 seconds ahead of the Czech Radek Laciga who had one of his best ever international races. Knudsen rode very strongly, especially towards the end of the race following a mistake in mid-race where he rode up a blind alley to a garage. In third place was the consistent Finnish rider Samuli Saarela, who was second overall in last year’s World Cup and is current middle distance world champion.
Marika Hara was 20 seconds faster than the joint second place riders, Michaela Gigon, Austria and Rikke Kornvig, Denmark, both of whom made mistakes in the tricky ex-military terrain.
