France won the Mixed Relay today, the last race in Round 1 of the World Cup in Hungary, finishing 22 seconds ahead of one of the favourites, Finland. Third place went to the Czech Republic.
It was in fact France’s second-nominated team that triumphed, their first team finishing fourth in the race. A fast ride by Cédric Beillou on last leg clinched the victory as he brought the team up from fourth place at the changeover. Jussi Laurila for Finland tried hard to keep in touch but could not make up the necessary metres. There was then a gap of almost three minutes until the third-placed team came in.
Italy made all the running in the early stages and led the race at both changeovers, but eventually finished seventh. The Czech Republic showed strength in depth with three of their teams amongst the top six in the finish.
