MTBO Sprint wins for Marika Hara and Grigory Medvedev

2017 World Sprint Champions are Marika Hara, Finland and Grigory Medvedev, Russia. Both won convincingly in the very detailed terrain near the centre of Vilnius. Emily Benham and Krystof Bogar are this year’s World Cup winners.
The race was in two parts: physically demanding in the early stages with hills and forest, followed by really fast urban areas and parkland with many route choices. There were plenty of mistakes being made and a cool head was needed to have a clean ride. In the women’s race, Olga Shipilova-Vinogradova, Russia was the fastest through radio controls 1 and 2, then Marika Hara was the best through to the finish. At radio 4 Hara was still being closely challenged by Emily Benham, Great Britain who was just 5 seconds down, but then Benham made a mistake in the maze of paths around control 22 costing her some 50 seconds. She was still fast enough to beat Shipilova-Vinogradova, however, who also made mistakes in the complex terrain.

The men’s race was dominated by Medvedev who caught up the previous starter Jussi Laurila, Finland at about the half-way point, and from that point they were more or less together. This is Medvedev’s first World Championships gold; his previous best was fifth in both the Long Distance and the Mass Start race. Lauri Malsroos, Estonia finished strongly to take the bronze medal. Last year’s champion, the Russian Anton Foliforov, was also racing for a medal position for much of the race but finished 14 seconds too slow in fourth place.

Emily Benham and Krystof Bogar win World Cup overall
This race was the climax to a very successful World MTBO Championships in Lithuania, and rounds off the international MTBO season. Emily Benham takes the overall crown in the World Cup for yet another year, winning 5 of the 10 races and finishing second twice and third once. The Czech rider Krystof Bogar takes the men’s crown with 2 wins and 3 third places. Next year the European Championships are in Hungary at the end of June and the World Championships in Austria in early August, with Round 3 of the World Cup in Portugal in the autumn.
