MTBO European Championships & World Cup: long distance titles go to World Cup winners

Marika Hara, Finland and Erik Skovgaard Knudsen, Denmark underlined their credentials as clear winners in the World Cup standings with victories in the mass-start long distance race today. This was Knudsen’s third individual victory of the week, and Hara’s second.
Marika Hara enjoyed the most convincing victory today, becoming European Champion by a margin of 1:40 over her team-mate Ingrid Stengård, victor at middle distance. Denmark’s Rikke Kornvig took the bronze medal, some consolation for an otherwise disappointing week. The final women’s World Cup standings show the same first three in the same order – Hara with 390 points, Stengård 336 and Kornvig 333.
Erik Skovgaard Knudsen won by 55 seconds, with Frantisek Bogar, Czech Republic taking the silver medal and his team-mate Marek Popisek the bronze, timed through the finish 1 second later. Samuli Saarela, Finland ended in second place in the overall World Cup standings (333 points to Knudsen’s 410) and Anton Foliforov, Russia was third (323).
Just as in the middle distance race, the weather was wet and riding conditions difficult with plenty of mud and water on the tracks.
