MTBO European Championships & World Cup: Knudsen and Hara win Sprint

Erik Skovgaard Knudsen, Denmark, the current leader in the men’s World Cup standings by a large margin, extended his lead and was crowned European Sprint Champion today with victory by 9 seconds. Marika Hara, Finland, previously joint leader in the women’s standings, is European Champion with a win also by 9 seconds.
Only two seconds separated second and fourth places in the men’s race, which was won in a time of 21.58 for the 6.0 km course (8.6 km optimum route). Jiri Hradil, Czech Republic took second place and Jussi Laurila, Finland third. Russian hope Anton Foliforov, second in the World Cup standings before today, was disqualified.
Gaelle Barlet, France took second place in the women’s race over 5.0 km (7.2 km optimum route) with Anna Kaminska, Poland third. Here the winning time was 19.21. The other joint standings leader, Michaela Gigon, finished fourth.
The race took place in the narrow streets of the old town of Vyborg in the Leningrad region of Russia, with the start beside an old fort on a small peninsula.
Tomorrow the middle distance race will be held.
