Mountain Bike Orienteering: Launch of World Ranking Events Series
Posted on | April 20, 2004 | Category: News
The 2004 mountain bike orienteering season sees the launch of a World Ranking Event series.
Last year, it was decided to introduce an annual World Championship in MTB orienteering and to abandon the World Cup series in this orienteering discipline. The 2004 World MTB Orienteering Championship will be held in Ballarat, Australia, in mid-October. The 2005, 2006 and 2007 editions of the event have been awarded to Slovakia, Finland and Czech Republic respectively.
In order to ensure an attractive event calendar, the IOF MTB Orienteering Commission has recently decided that, as a complement to the World Championships, a World Ranking Event (WRE) series be established from 2004 onwards. The inaugural World Ranking Series consists of six (6) events as follows:
| Dates | Venue | Type of event |
| 22 May | Sopron, Hungary | Middle distance |
| 23 May | Sopron, Hungary | Long distance |
| 7 August | Epila, Finland | Middle distance |
| 8 August | Epila, Finland | Long distance |
| 28 August | Novy Bor, Czech Republic | Middle distance |
| 29 August | Novy Bor, Czech Republic | Long distance |
The 35 best competitors in each class obtain points, and the best five out of six races will count for the total score.
The WRE calendar and scores list will be available on the IOF website.
