Map Clinic in Ecuador

Ecuador is one of the IOF’s newest Member Federations in South America. The Orienteering Federation of Ecuador recently organised an orienteering Map Clinic in Quito, in the capital of Ecuador. Participants form Ecuador took part in the IOF Development Clinic a few years ago and regional coordinators have also visited the country. The Orienteering Federation of Ecuador have been working hard on transforming from provisional member to full member, active participation in World Orienteering Day, supporting the seven orienteering clubs formed in the country and organising the CISM World Cadet Games in 2014.
A helping hand
László Zentai, Council member of the IOF and former map commission chairman, is a professor of cartography. He visited Ecuador in July 2016 and offered the Ecuadorian orienteers a 3-day map clinic. The topics were fit to the need of the local orienteers: the first day was mostly theoretical, the second day was mostly a fieldwork and the last day was concentrated on map drawing. The theoretical presentations were focused on the international specifications of orienteering maps, the different basemaps of orienteering and the basics of the fieldwork.
The venue of the event was the Central City Sport Center, close to the most well-known city park (Parque la Carolina), where the practical session was held. Another fieldwork session was planned in a different city park, in Park Metropolitano Guangüiltagua, which is much more suitable for forest orienteering, but finally the participants preferred a map drawing practice session using their computers.
The participants were really enthusiastic and hopefully this map clinic will contribute the development of the orienteering in Ecuador. Thank you to the Orienteering Federation of Ecuador organizing this event, and to László Zentai for sharing his expertise.
