Long distance race ended in sprint finish
Posted on | May 18, 2014 | Category: News
Long distance with mass start, the second event in this year’s MTB Orienteering World Cup, was exciting from the start to the finish. 68 men and 45 women started on the course.
In the men’s class, Pekka Niemi from Finland was strongest in the sprint, winning the race 3 seconds before Davide Machado from Portugal. Czech Jiri Hradil finished third. Davide Machado’s result was the best ever result for any Portuguese orienteer in a World Cup, but not a big surprise. When portrayed in the IOF Athlete of the Month in April 2013, Machado told about his goals to become even better, and said the distance he likes most is, indeed, long distance.
In the women’s class, Finland took a double victory with Ingrid Stengård and Marika Hara. Emily Benham from Great Britain was third.
