Long distance final: second golds for Wyder and Hubmann

The European Championships Long distance final produced wins for Switzerland’s Judith Wyder (already Sprint champion) and Daniel Hubmann (Middle distance champion). Wyder won by more than 1½ minutes, whilst Hubmann’s victory was tighter – 25 seconds.
Whilst Judith Wyder could be considered one of the favourites in the women’s race, that could not be said about either the silver or the bronze medallists. Silver went to the young Russian Svetlana Mironova who was a convincing heat winner in the qualification race last week, whilst the bronze medal was taken by Great Britain’s Cath Taylor in a time exaxtly one minute slower than the Russian’s. Tove Alexandersson, Sweden was in contention for much of the race, but a mistake at control 14 and, especially, again at control 21 put paid to her chances.
Daniel Hubmann’s victory owed much to superior strength and stamina in the last part of the race. Bronze medallist Fredrik Johansson, Sweden was fastest at the spectator passage but was eventually beaten both by Hubmann and also the Norwegian Olav Lundanes, another runner with a lot of success at Long distance. Two seconds separated Lundanes and Johansson at the end.
The final race of the European Championships tomorrow is the relay.
