Kyburz: “I had to stop at some controls”

The results were very tight in the first Sprint race in the 2016 World Cup in central Wroclaw, Poland, where there were a lot of challenges – and also five instead of three on the podium in the women’s class. Swiss team-mates Judith Wyder and Matthias Kyburz were the winners.
“It was really a very challenging course”, says Kyburz. The Swiss star won by just one second in front of his team-mate Daniel Hubmann.
“I made a few mistakes. It was certainly possible to have a better time”, says Daniel, who had in fact made far more mistakes the day before. Today he was back on a high level.
“I had to stop at some controls because I hadn’t worked out my route choice to the next control”, says winner Kyburz.
– That doesn’t happen too often, I guess?
“No, that’s really right”, he says and gives an example. “On the way to the third control I tried to find the best route choice to the fourth control. I had to read so much that I missed the third control a bit and lost some time”.

In the women’s class, Judith Wyder won with a time 8 seconds faster than Maja Alm. Three girls shared the third spot – Marika Teini, Tove Alexandersson and Nadiya Volynska. So there were five on the podium!

The women had a course of 3.5 kilometres with 22 controls. The men had to find 25 controls on their 4.2 kilometre course. Both winners had also won their qualification heat in the morning.
Tomorrow the first round of the World Cup ends with a Sprint Relay.
