Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships: Venue change forced by lack of snow

Almost 200 athletes representing 19 nations will be taking part in this year’s Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships, which starts on Monday in low alpine terrain just east of Salzburg, Austria.
Russia has the largest number of competitors, with the maximum allowed 7 men and 7 women in their team. Finland and Sweden travel with 12 athletes and Norway with 10.
Like many other European countries, Austria has lacked snow at lower levels this winter. This has forced a last-minute change of venue for the sprint and middle distance races, with the reserve area Sportgastein coming into use. Within the last two weeks new maps have been produced, courses planned and tracks made.
The much higher area Postalm – Europe’s second-largest high plateau, 1100 to 1400 m above sea level – is where the long distance and relay events will be staged. The very stormy weather in January caused snow to be completely blown away in some places and tracks blocked by fallen trees in others. Here too some changes to the planned courses have been necessary.
The Junior World Championships are for athletes aged 20 and under. Younger competitors will be taking part in the European Youth Championships at the same venues.

Thursday 15 February: Long distance, Postalm
Friday 16 February: Relay, Postalm
