IOF 50 Years to be celebrated at World Championships
Posted on | August 6, 2011 | Category: News
The IOF celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and the occasion will be marked by a special ceremony to be held at 12:30 on Friday 19th August, in the race arena immediately before the start of the middle distance finals.
It is fitting that the 50th year also coincides with a big leap in the number of nations taking part in the Championships. A collection of used compasses has been organised at the Championships, and it is hoped to collect at least 500 compasses. These will be passed on to nations where orienteering is in its infancy, to help with development.
A special anniversary edition of the IOF magazine Orienteering World will be published, with articles about the growth and development of orienteering over the past 50 years.
Other activities include an anniversary organ recital in Chambery cathedral and the opening of a new permanent course close to the championship race areas.
