Happiness & sadness for Kvåle

At the prize-giving for the middle distance race, Hans Jørgen Kvåle’s face changed from big happiness to sadness. The Norwegian won his first individual gold, but his thoughts were also with a person from his home town.
“I will honour Hans Bjone with this gold”, said Kvåle at the end of the prize-giving when he had got the microphone from the speaker. Bjone was one of five Norwegians who lost their lives in a terror attack in Algeria. The funeral was on the same day that Hans Jørgen got his first gold.
“Bjone is from the same place as I am, and I know him from sport. And a daughter of his was in the same class as me at school”.
Hans Jørgen thought it was difficult on the middle distance course. “When I became unsure I decreased my speed and didn’t make any mistakes”, he says.
The 23-year-old Norwegian moved to Sweden in the autumn of 2008 to become better at ski orienteering. Since then he has been living in the neighbour country to Norway. “The gold is my biggest achievement so far, and it gives me extra inspiration for my on-going work. My big goal on the horizon is the World Ski Orienteering Championships in Norway in 2015”, he says.
