The Russian Orienteering Federation is the latest of our federations to confirm that they want to buy a full TV rights package of the 2014 World Orienteering Championships in Italy in July, including the live coverage of all five finals.
Russia is joining Norway, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Azerbaijan who are also planning to show the championships on TV. Discussions are on-going to have the World Championships broadcast again in the USA this year and the IOF and USOF are optimistic about finding a suitable broadcaster. Further approaches are being made to other countries and distributers.
Russia supports the IOF’s Olympic objectives
The Russian Orienteering Federation has made clear that its commitment to the TV project is directly related to the IOF’s Olympic objectives, as increased visibility of the sport in both the summer and winter is critical to that goal. That was also one of the reasons for the federation to deliver the most extensive TV coverage of ski orienteering ever from last week’s European Championships in Tyumen. This was done through substantial external sponsorship.
IOF President Brian Porteous comments: “We are absolutely delighted for this news and for the excellent TV coverage from the European Ski Orienteering Championships in Tyumen last week. This confirms my belief that the strategic objective of Olympic inclusion is one of the most powerful levers available to the sport for increasing external support and funding. We are all looking forward to seeing fantastic TV from the streets of Venice and the forests of Trentino and Veneto in July.”
