Annika Billstam on her way to the finish.
Annika Billstam took her first World Cup triumph at Nordic Orienteering Tour’s final event in Norway. “It’s wonderful to finally have made it”, Annika smiles. She showed her glad feelings on the way to the finish line when the audience gave her a big hand. “I have been number two, three, four and five a lot of times, but have never managed to win a World Cup race before now”, she says.
Annika seems to be on a new level in Sprint competitions. Now she has also improved her performance in the forest.
It’s soon three years since you took silver on the long distance at the World Championships in Czech Republic. Will you now be fighting for the gold medal in France?
“I think it’s not so easy to have medal goals but after the race in Norway I can see that I have all the possibilities”, she says.
The Norwegian World Cup event took place during midsummer. The day is a big celebration in Sweden but not as much in Norway. “But there must be some herring in Norwegian shops?” asks Annika cheerfully. “It has been a good midsummer.”
The Finn Merja Rantanen finished six seconds after Annika. Lena Eliasson was third totally in the first World Cup races this year.
