First ever Canadian medal

Posted on | July 10, 2012 | Category: Arena

Two years ago Emily Kemp took a big step and moved to the other side of the world to become an even better orienteer. Yesterday she wrote history by being the first ever Canadian to win a medal at orienteering World Championships.

“The first Canadian ever to take a medal at orienteering world championships? I think so”, Emily smiles.

Emily’s Junior World Championships career started in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2008, where she already did well and showed a specially good talent.

But this year was her real break-through, and she will be the first Canadian on the podium in Junior World Championships.  “For years I have seen a lot of girls go up and get medals. Now is it my time. I can’t believe it!”, Emily says.

The Canadian is from Ottawa and started with orienteering at the age of eight. She took a big step in 2010 when she moved to St. Etienne in France.  In St. Etienne there are very good opportunities for training and competing.

“I don’t know if I would have been able to get this medal without moving to France, but I do know I have increased my level significantly during these years”, she says.

This spring she was also with the French junior team on a training camp in Kosice. “I learnt how to do orienteering here. It was a very important camp.”

Junior World Championships were Emily’s big goal this year, so she will not be participating  in the senior World Orienteering Championships that take place in Lausanne, Switzerland.
