European SkiO Championships: Alexandersson back on form; first gold for Norway

Tove Alexandersson, Sweden got back on the success trail today with a convincing victory by 1.33 in the Middle Distance race. In the men’s race there was a clear win for Lars Hol Moholdt, Norway, the first Norwegian medal of the Championships.
The closest challenger to Tove Alexandersson was the top Russian skier Mariya Kechkina, but she was unable to match Alexandersson’s speed on another settled, sunny day in Imitra, eastern Finland. The race had an interval start and visibility in the forest was in places quite low, so good technical skills too were essential for success. The strong Russian team packed closely at the top of the results board, with the bronze medal today being won by Alena Trapeznikova.
Lars Hol Moholdt made up for a disappointing week so far with a convincing performance, ahead of the Russian Kirrill Veselov and Bulgarian Stanimir Belomazhev. Best Swede was Martin Hammarberg in 6th place. Andrey Lamov, Russia, gold medallist in both Sprint and Long Distance, had many problems today and ended well down.
The men’s race in particular featured a number of disqualifications due to the athletes skiing on terrain shown as out-of-bounds. After several complaints and protests, the jury considered what had happened and decided that in the principle of sporting fairness, the critical part would be removed from the course, and therefore there are no disqualifications because of running in the forbidden area. The results are therefore changed from those published earlier in the day.
The Championships end tomorrow (Sunday) with the Relay races; the women’s starts at 12.00 and the men’s at 13.40 local time.
In the Junior World SkiO Championships, the Russian Vladislav Kiselev won his third individual gold today with a very clear victory in Middle Distance by 2.41. Liisa Nenonen, Finland has won 2 golds and 1 silver. Results in the European Youth Championships (W/M17) have had similar individual dominance, here with 2 golds and 1 silver for Veronika Kalinina, Russia and 2 golds for home athlete Vaino Kotro. First medal for the Czech Republic in Imatra went today to Jan Hasek in M17 (silver).
