European Ski Orienteering Championships: Kozlova and Arnesson win long distance golds

Today’s long distance race with three loops after a mass start ended with victories for Tatyana Kozlova of Russia, silver medallist at this distance at the last World SkiO Championships, and Peter Arnesson, Sweden who just missed a medal in yesterday’s Middle race.
The margin at the end of the women’s race was 37 seconds, with Sweden’s Josefine Engström taking her second silver medal of the Championships. The young Swede Tove Alexandersson showed that she is regaining her ski legs after her running exploits in New Zealand; in the race today she was a clear third, 2.18 down on the winner. Kozlova led the race and Engström was second throughout, but behind these two there were several changes in order as the race progressed.
Peter Arnesson, in his 13th season at top international level, won the men’s race by 18 seconds after a superb third loop in which he moved up from 5th place. The silver went to Hans Jørgen Kvåle, Norway, gold medallist at middle distance yesterday. He and bronze medallist Staffan Tunis, Finland, both made early mistakes and were well down the field at the first map change, where Russian Andrei Lamov was the leader. Lars Hol Moholdt, Norway led the field at the second map change but finished fourth, 57 seconds down on the winner.

Most emphatic win of the day belongs to Frida Sandberg, Sweden, who took the Junior World Championships gold medal with a margin of 2.43 from her nearest challenger (see article on her, written after the middle distance race, in the ‘Around the Arena’ section at the foot of the Home Page).
Friday is a rest day, and the Championships continue on Saturday with the individual Sprints.
