EMTBOC Middle race: two medals to France & Russia, one each to Sweden & Finland

Gaelle Barlet, France and Anton Foliforov, Russia are the 2015 Middle Distance Champions after today’s race in Vale das Eiras, near Idanha-a-Nova in Portugal.
Gaelle Barlet took her second gold medal of the Championships with a win by 7 seconds over Cecilia Thomasson, Sweden, with Marika Hara, Finland in bronze medal position a further 20 seconds down. Thomasson had been fastest overall for two sections in the middle portion of the race, and it was only from 3 controls out that Barlet established a lead. The leading six riders in this race were from six different nations.
The men’s race was more clear-cut, with Anton Foliforov the fastest overall from control 13 of the 29-control course; silver medallist Yoann Garde, France, was the fastest just at the twelfth control and finished 17 seconds down on Foliforov. Another Russian, Valeriy Glukov who was silver medallist in the Sprint, took the bronze, 29 seconds slower than Garde. The strong French team packed three riders into the first six in the results.
In the Junior Championships, the women’s race went to the Czech Veronika Kubinova by the impressive margin of 2.16. Sauli Pietikainen, Finland is the men’s Junior Champion with victory by 19 seconds.
Thursday is a rest day, and the Championships continue on Friday with the Long Distance at Monfortinho.
