Cyprus IOF member No. 73

At its meeting in Helsinki, the IOF Council approved the application for membership from the KOMOAA – the national sports federation governing, promoting and organising mountaineering, sport climbing and orienteering events in Cyprus. To be final, the Council’s decision must be ratified by the XXVI Ordinary General Assembly in Lausanne in 2012.
The KOMOAA has in total 600 athletes. The number of orienteers participating in events is approximately 50.
About 12 years ago, the Cyprus Athletic Organization (KOA) made efforts to introduce the sport of orienteering in Cyprus. Due to lack of orienteering maps and the necessary resources and expertise to make them, the KOA efforts did not, however, lead to any further development of the sport. In 2010, an orienteering club was established, two orienteering maps were completed and four events were organised. To speed up the development, the club, ORIENTACTION, decided to join the existing national mountaineering and sport climbing federation KOMOAA.
Cyprus participated in the meeting of the South East Orienteering Working Group in March 2011. Some members will take part in the O-Ringen Academy this summer, and the aim is to produce at least 10 maps over a period of three years in different parts of the country.
With Cyprus joining the family, the IOF now has 73 members.
