Bronze for Lithuania! – Vilius Aleliunas

You’d think that when an orienteer for the first time reaches an international medal, he would have had the race of his life. But that is not the case for Vilius Aleliunas, today’s bronze medallist on The World Games middle distance. In fact, he says he didn’t feel at all that it went well physically today, and “in some upphills I was really wondering what I am doing here”, he says.
However, Vilius did not make big mistakes during the race, even though he took some slower route choices after the spectator control. He says he was not very fast, but guesses that his ski orienteering background might have helped him today. “Until two years ago I was competing in ski orienteering, and today’s race reminded me of SkiO races, where you have to choose the right track through the forest”, he says.
Lithuania had a very good day today in the men’s class, when their second participant Jonas Vytautas Gvildys finished sevent.
Vilius’ next big goal is the World Military Championships in Sweden in August. Lithuania will be sending a big and good team there.
