Billstam: “I felt I always had control”

Annika Billstam had to stop training for three weeks in the spring, and now has had a very long summer holiday, which was important for her second Middle gold in a row.
Billstam was one of the favourites, but also not the biggest one. The Swede hadn’t been so impressive in recent months. “I have all the time felt I have control over what to do, but I also felt some unsureness about whether I would qualify. There’s a hard fight for team places in Sweden”, she says.
The Swede had to stop training for three weeks in the spring. “I had a virus”. Just after WOC – already on the coming Monday – she will be back at work full-time again. She normally works full- time.
“But I have had summer holiday in June and July. That has been important for doing well now. I’ve got the time to sleep”, she smiles. “And I’ve got the time to work hard and to do the preparations I want”.
She felt a bit nervous at the start of the challenging course, and she told herself not to push too hard, to avoid making a mistake.
Together with the two golds from Middle Distance she has the gold from the Long Distance in France in 2011.
