Men’s long distance event concluded the World Ski Orienteering Championships in Kazakhstan.
As in the women’s race, the positions changed drastically during the race, and it was only on the fourth and last loop that it became clear there were two candidates for victory: the three-time gold medallist Peter Arnesson, Sweden, and Janne Häkkinen from Finland. At the end, Arnesson was 2 seconds faster than Häkkinen, and took his fourth gold, and fifth medal, at these Championships.
Staffan Tunis, Finland, got the bronze medal as Vladimir Barchukov, Russia, made a bad route choice on the last loop, and lost the fight for medals. Hannu-Pekka Pukema completed Finland’s good day by finishing fifth.
