Annika had to fight hard

Annika Billstam, The World Games Sprint Champion, says she did not make any mistakes on the course. Her biggest challenge was to start in a pace that she could keep up until the finish. “I really had to fight hard halfway through the course to be able to keep up the speed”, Annika says.

“The course was easy, but I think the coursesetter did the best he could with the area. The challenging parts were to get the controls in the park in a good flow and be in advance in your orienteering the whole way.”

What is also important on courses like this is to be able to concentrate when the leg seems easy: “On the long running legs we tend to read the map for the coming legs. However, you have to be very careful to still concentrate on the leg you are running. Otherwise you might make a “stupid” mistake.”

The weather was hot during the race, around 30 degrees. “I never thought about the heat during my race and it was not a problem for me. I think it was harder for the men who got more sunshine. Heat can be a problem for some athletes”, Annika says.
