With a flag in his hand and with big applause from thousands of spectators, Thierry Gueorgiou ran into the arena to take his first gold on the long distance.
“The last 30 seconds of the race I will remember for always”, smiles Thierry.
He was the big favourite on the long distanc,e a distance he had not got a World Championships gold on earlier, and it ended with a very clear victory. The Frenchman was 4.27 minutes faster than second best Pasi Ikonen from Finland.
Just as normal he ran very well, but he wasn’t sure about the speed. “I pushed hard, but I wasn’t sure my speed was fast enough”, he says.
Prior to this race he had six of the eight golds awarded at World Championships on the middle distance, and also a gold on the sprint. “I wouldn’t have changed one of the middle golds for a long gold, but it’s very special to get this long gold that has been my goal to get here in France. Now I have won in all the three individual formats, he says. No one man has done that before.
Next up is the middle final. “I like that distance best and will do my best”, he smiles.
