The Japan Orienteering Association (JOA) sent a team of nine orienteers to the 2011 World Ski Orienteering Championships held during 20-28 March 2011 in Tänndalen, Sweden. The Championships took place shortly after the destructive Japanese earthquake and the Japanese team received a lot of support from the other participating countries in the form of encouraging letters and donations from all 27 participating teams. The Japan Orienteering Association reports that the donations totalled ¥111,041 (€931,86) and the total sum has been put forward to the Japanese Red Cross in order to help the victims.

According to JOA, the situation before the Championships was very chaotic in North-East Japan and it was difficult for the Japanese to contact the national team members in the area. All training camps had to be cancelled. The Japan Orienteering Association mentions in their press release that they weren’t sure if they would be able to send a team to the World Championships : “at one point we even considered withdrawing our participation in the championship. However, we kept in mind what it would mean for the team to represent Japan in the World Championships and we continued to modify our arrangements until the very last minute. As a result, we were able to send the whole of the Japanese team to the Championship.”

The Japanese team had four newcomers this year and the national federation was pleased with their performance: “They did manage to exceed their objectives and obtain excellent results. We have great expectations for their performance in the next World Championships and the up and coming tournaments in Asia.”
