A special birthday present

Today Stanimir Belomazhev won his first international title, on his 25th birthday. The Bulgarian was back in business in the Sprint.
“Why it went well? It was my birthday”, smiles Stanimir. The now 25-year-old athlete didn’t have a good start to the European Championships. On the middle distance he made a lot of mistakes, and on the long distance he broke both his skis. The Sprint was very different. “Apart from a mistake on the third control, everything went very well”, he says.
Last year Stanimir got a silver medal at the European Championships in Ukraine. Again in the Sprint. “Well it’s maybe my distance”, smiles the winner. From the start he had a very good race. He was concentrated on the orienteering and felt in great shape.
After the championships in Latvia he is going home for his final preparation for the World Championships in Kazakhstan.
Among the men it was a very close fight for the gold. Just one second was the difference to Peter Arnesson in second place. The Swede was seen to slow down when finishing. “I was thinking the finish line was where there were a couple of flags, but I saw it too fast. It was my own fault”.
– You lost the gold on it?
“No, I will not say that. I didn’t lose much time on it. I lost the gap out in the forest”, Arnesson says.
