A great start for Lauri

Lauri Sild is a first year senior and had a good qualification on the long distance, but he has really something to do if he shall follow in his father’s footsteps in the final.

– I am not good enough to do as well as my father. I have still a long way to go, smiles the Estonian. He was eighth in one the three heats, and fifteen qualified from every heat.
– The goal for the Championship was to get to the finals, he says.
With a good race on the long qualification the first part of that is achieved.
– The qualification on the long was a bit mixed. I didn’t have such good flow all the way.
How much have you prepared for the races in the very technical terrain?
– Estonia had a training camp in June. That’s when I had been here beforehand.

His father Sixten got bronze on the long distance 20 years ago. He in fact took part in his first championship also in France, but he injured his ankle just before the race and couldn’t start. Lauri’s older brother Timo got gold on the Junior World Orienteering Championships relay in 2006, but he has struggled with injuries and is not a part of the Estonian team in France.
Young Lauri is often mentioned and compared with both his father and brother.
– And that’s just nice, he says.
