38 nations to compete in Junior World Orienteering Championships

Posted on | July 9, 2017 | Category: News

The Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) starts on Monday in Tampere, Finland. Thirty-eight nations will have athletes taking part.

177 men and 153 women are entered in the two classes, W20 and M20, in JWOC. The competition is organised this year by the Finnish club Koovee, a multi-sports club based in Tampere, a city with several orienteering clubs and with first-class orienteering terrain round about. Many of the region’s best orienteers are involved in planning and organising the competitions.

Competitors will encounter terrain varying from hilly city urban for the Sprint to forested hills with some bare rock and very detailed slopes for the Long Distance. Much of the terrain for the Long, Middle and Relay races is described as very runnable, and with few paths. It should prove a good challenge for all the competitors, be they already at top elite level or competing in an international event for the first time.

Full details can be found in the race bulletins and on the event website, www.jwoc2017.fi, which will carry live results and other services throughout each race.
