2004 Junior World Championships: Swedish & Norwegian Juniors Win Middle Distance Golds

Helena Jansson, Sweden, and Audun Bjerkreim Nilsen, Norway, were the winners of the Middle Distance final, the first of the finals at the Junior World Championships being held this week in northern Poland.
Jansson, bronze medallist at classic distance in last year’s JWOC, ran the 4.13 km course 1 minute 9 seconds faster than her closest rival, Radka Brozkova from the Czech Republic. Anni-Maija Fincke, Finland, took the bronze medal a further 22 seconds behind.
Audun Bjerkreim Nilsen, a 20-year-old student who runs for Kristiansand OK in Norway, won the men’s race over 4.61 km ahead of last year’s gold medallist at this distance, Matthias Merz from Switzerland, who was 25 seconds slower. The bronze went to Simonas Krepsta, Lithuania.
