17 nations ready for the first final of the 2007 World Cup

A total of 17 nations qualified for the Sprint Finals in the first World Cup round of the 2007 season, staged in Lapua Finland.
The new World Cup model gives nations up to 10 runners in the qualification heats, based on the nation’s strength in the IOF World Ranking. In the women’s heats 10 nations managed to qualify, and in the men’s heats 17 nations got runners through to the final.
The big names were seen on the top of the qualifier rankings, with world stars Simone Niggli-Luder of Switzerland and Thierry Gueorgiou of France not surprisingly topping their respective heats. An interesting comeback to orienteering was noted by Finn Marten Boström, who has spent the winter season in the track and field environments in the United States. Boström ended second in his heat, beaten by Norwegian raising star Audun Hultgren Weltzien by 13 seconds.
Among the fall-outs of notice was the Swede Martin Johansson, outside the final by 3 seconds, the strong Finn Jonne Lakanen who was disqualified for a missing punch and Norway’s Øystein Kristiansen.
The finals will be starting at 17.00 Finnish time, and be broadcast live by YLE, the Finnish National Television Company.
