World MTB Orienteering Championships: double gold in men’s Sprint

Hans Jørgen Kvåle, Norway and Anton Foliforov, Russia both clocked the fastest time in the men’s Sprint today, 21.46. The women’s gold medal was won by Marika Hara, Finland.
The races were held in parkland and forest on the edge of Bialystok in north-east Poland. The men’s race was very tight with another Russian, Grigory Medvedev, in third place just 6 seconds slower than the two gold medallists. Russia also took fourth place with Ruslan Gritsan who was in the Sprint Relay winning team yesterday. The first eight in the results were all within 1 minute of the winning time.
There was a bit more spread in the women’s timings. Marika Hara was 20 seconds quicker than the silver medallist, Tatiana Repina from Russia, the other half of the winning pairing yesterday. The bronze medal went to Emily Benham, Great Britain, who finished 25 seconds down.
The junior titles went to Veronika Kubinova, Czech Republic and Oskar Sandberg, Sweden. Tim Robertson from New Zealand, World Champion in Sprint at the Junior World Championships (footO) in Bulgaria this summer, failed to achieve the same feat in MTBO by just 3 seconds and took the silver medal.
Tomorrow the Middle Distance titles will be decided.
