Middle Distance MTBO golds to Sweden and Russia

New World Champions at Middle Distance in MTB Orienteering are Cecilia Thomasson, Sweden and Ruslan Gritsan, Russia after today’s race on hilly and varied terrain at Jurowce in Poland.
Cecilia Thomasson, World Champion in Sprint last year, won today by a good margin of 34 seconds. The silver medal went to Emily Benham, Great Britain, bronze medallist yesterday, and today’s bronze medallist was the new Sprint champion Marika Hara, Finland.
In the men’s race Russian riders took gold and bronze. Ruslan Gritsan was 31 seconds faster than silver medallist Jiri Hradil, Czech Republic today, and new joint Sprint champion Anton Foliforov was a further 32 seconds slower. Last year’s Middle Distance champion Tonis Erm, Estonia was fifth today.
In the Junior Championships the women’s gold medal went to Kajsa Engström, Sweden. Tim Robertson, junior Sprint world champion in footO, made the long journey from New Zealand thoroughly worthwhile with victory by more than a minute in the men’s race, following his silver medal yesterday.
Tomorrow (Thursday) is a rest day, followed on Friday by the Long Distance race. Here the planned winning times are 105 – 115 minutes; the courses are 27.3 km and 37.8 km for women and men respectively.
