Simone Niggli is certainly back. In her first international championship since 2010 she showed that she’s as strong as ever by winning the European Championships middle distance with a margin of 1.25 before Minna Kauppi, Finland, on second place.
17/05/2012 || Lundanes in his own class on Middle Distance ||News||
Olav Lundanes, Norway, didn’t give anyone else a chance on the European Orienteering Championships middle distance: he led the race from start to finish, and finally won the competition with 1.19 minutes’ marginal to defending European Champion Valentin Novikov, Russia.

The last finalists for the European Orienteering Championships 2012 were determined at the Sprint qualification in Falun, Sweden, this morning.
15/05/2012 || Long Qualification: emphatic victory for Simone Niggli ||News||
Defending European Champion at Long Distance, Simone Niggli, set out her stall in perfect fashion today with a win by as much as 2:42 over one of yesterday’s qualification winners, Minna Kauppi. The male defending champion, Daniel Hubmann, wasn’t on the start list today, but his country Switzerland is the only one to have 12 runners in the finals.

14/05/2012 || European Orienteering Championships: 18 nations in Middle Distance final ||News||
Today the first qualification races, over Middle Distance, were held at Falun, wit the results showing that eighteen nations will have runners in the final on Thursday. Defending men’s champion Valentin Novikov RUS made his intentions clear by winning his heat, whilst defending women’s champion Simone Niggli SUI came second behind Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg NOR.

The first major international foot and trail orienteering competitions of the year, the European Orienteering Championships (EOC) and the European Trail Orienteering Championships (ETOC), take place in this coming week beginning on Monday 14th May. 387 athletes representing 33 nations will compete in EOC; 96 competitors from 13 nations in ETOC.
