Full points and just 1 second difference at the timed controls; that was the situation at the top of the results board for the Open class after the first day of PreO today. Jari Turto, Finland has the smallest of advantages overnight over his fellow countryman Antti Rusanen. Michael Johansson, Sweden, leads the Paralympic class by a slightly bigger margin: 3 seconds!

The TempO qualification competition of the European Trail Orienteering Championships on Sunday was delayed because of fog; it was simply not possible to see the controls from the viewing points

Judith Wyder, Switzerland and Jonas Leandersson, Sweden are the two new Sprint champions after closely-fought races in Portugal today. Wyder was fastest by just 2 seconds, whilst Leandersson had a more comfortable victory by 9 seconds in retaining his European Sprint title from 2012.

Swiss runners won four out of the six Sprint qualifying heats in the European Championships run today, and also took two second places in the women’s heats by just 2 seconds in each case.

Signe Søes, Denmark and Gernot Kerschbaumer, Austria, won their qualification heats today in the European Orienteering Championships for the second day in succession. The Long distance qualification races took runners through forest with very varied runnability in the Palmela region of Portugal.
