Opening Ceremony followed Sprint

Posted on | July 14, 2012 | Category: Arena

The Opening Ceremony of the World Championships was held after the Sprint races were over, on a sunny summer evening beside the harbour in Lausanne.

Each nation’s team was led by a local schoolgirl or boy who had been taking part in a youth orienteering championship earlier. A traditional jazz band led the parade into the arena. All the speeches were given in English or French with a translation into the other language shown on the big screen. In between there were displays of tap dancing. Then the longest o-map in the world, created by linking together a large series of maps in the area, was brought on and displayed; it is 31 metres long at 1:10,000.

After the Opening Ceremony, a prize-giving for the youth championships was held, and then the prize-giving for the Sprint races.
