World Orienteering Championships: new 3 times Matthias success story

Posted on | July 14, 2012 | Category: News

Matthias Kyburz, Matthias Merz and Matthias Mueller took gold, silver and bronze in today’s men’s Sprint to the huge delight of the massive Swiss support by the harbour in Lausanne.

Here they went one better than in the World Cup Post Finance Sprint just a short while ago, where the names Kyburz, Merz and Mueller appeared next to each other in the results in the same order – but behind Sweden’s Jerker Lysell. This time they made no mistake. Mueller was the first of the three to finish, then Kyburz just under 4 minutes later less 27 seconds. All eyes were on Matthias Merz as he came to the finish run-in, but he was clearly too late to match Kyburz’s time and he had to settle for second place.

The closest runner to the Swiss medallists today was Great Britain’s Scott Fraser, 12.2 seconds slower than Mueller. He missed the spectator control just in front of the stage, running straight past it and having to come back, but that probably didn’t lose him 12 seconds.

Full results and masses of information on today’s races can be found on the event website www.woc2012.ch. Interviews and more reports from today will appear later in the ‘Around the Arena’ section at the foot of this page.
