World Orienteering Championships: Sprint Final on Olympic territory
Posted on | July 14, 2012 | Category: News
This afternoon’s Sprint Final takes place close to the shores of Lake Geneva in down-town Lausanne, in the region of the Olympic Park and with the finish in a superb location right beside the city’s yacht harbour.
The International Olympic Committee has of course its headquarters in Lausanne, so a perfect place for a sport with Olympic ambitions to choose for one of its biggest showpiece events! A big crowd of local support, boosted by masses of spectators from many of the 53 nations represented in the races today, will be cheering on the runners finding their way through the narrow streets and alleyways, plus patches of park and woodland, that make up the terrain for today’s final. An intense atmosphere in the approaches to the finish, and especially in the narrow confines of the final run-in, is guaranteed.
Live television coverage will bring the races to Swiss viewers at home and many more around the world. Some of the latest TV technology will be used to get close to the athletes and pick out the decisive moments which determine who will end up with the gold, silver and bronze medals today.
Following the final will be the World Championships Opening Ceremony, at which two of the speakers are the President of SportAccord, Hein Verbruggen, and Johann Schneider-Ammann representing the Swiss government. Entertainment beforehand will be provided by a team of break-dancers, and the athletes’ procession will be led by a jazz band.
