Junior World Orienteering Championships: Middle distance golds for New Zealand & Sweden

Posted on | July 12, 2012 | Category: News

Matt Ogden, New Zealand pulled out the race of his life to take the men’s Middle distance title by 13 seconds today. The young Swedish star Tove Alexandersson won her second gold medal of the week.

It has been a very good week for Matt Ogden; 10th in the Sprint, 14th in Long distance, 5th in his qualification heat yesterday and now a world champion. After the first control he was in the top 5 time-wise throughout the rest of the race and had a very consistent run in the always technical and sometimes slow terrain at Izra, Slovakia with many quite short legs on the course. Jan Petržela, Czech Republic took his second silver medal of these championships, and the bronze medal went to Florian Schneider, Switzerland who was just 1 second slower than the silver-medal time.

Eskil Kinneberg, Norway, Long distance gold medallist, made mistakes from the start today and finished in 37th place. Sprint gold medallist Gleb Tikhonov, Russia finished 15th.

Tove Alexandersson made up for her disappointment in the Long distance race with a convincing victory by 53 seconds today over her team colleague Frida Sandberg, who also got the silver medal in the Long. Tove made a cautious start but soon got into her rhythm and was fastest of all from half-way. The bronze medal again went to Switzerland, Sandrine Mueller finishing 1.48 down on Tove Alexandersson’s time.

It was a good day for Sweden’s women with Sara Hagström taking 4th place. Fastest qualifier Emily Kemp, Canada finished 17th today, 3.57 down on the lead, and Long distance gold medallist Kirsi Nurmi, Finland was 48th having made a number of small mistakes in the early part of the course.

The final JWOC race, the Relay, is tomorrow.
