World Masters Orienteering Championships: Five double champions

The World Masters Orienteering Championships long distance final competition was held on Saturday near Torfhaus, Germany. After two tough qualification races the A finalists definitely deserved their places. All participants got to run, though, as there were finals for everyone: in the biggest class, M65, there were 6 finals altogether from A to F, according to the qualification results.
Five double champions were crowned at these Championships. Claire Ward, GBR (W35), Sole Nieminen, FIN (W85), Petteri Muukkonen, FIN (M35), Thomas Jensen, DEN (M40) and Michael Finkenstädt, GER (M45) won both sprint and long distance race.
Some other famous names on the podium were Sarah Rollins, GBR, 2nd in W35, Nick Barrable, GBR, 2nd in M35, Yuri Omelchenko, UKR, 2nd in M40, Lena Larsson (President of the Swedish Orienteering Federation), SWE, 2nd in W55, Maria Luder (Simone Niggli’s mother), SUI, winner of W65.
Next year the World Masters Orienteering Championships take place in Sestriere, Italy, near Turin, in conjunction with the World Masters Games in early August. More information on the event will be published shortly on the IOF website and in Inside Orienteering.
